The 33 degrees of the Rite

The first three degrees of the Rite are conferred in a Symbolic Workshop under the jurisdiction of a Grand Lodge.

The next thirty degrees are under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Council, but only nine of them are conferred by ceremony (in bold below), the others are conferred by communication (in italics below).

  • 1° degree: Apprentice
  • 2° degree: Fellow
  • 3° degree: Master
  • 4° degree: Secret Master
  • 5° grade: Perfect Master
  • 6° grade: Intimate Secretary
  • 7° grade: Provost and Judge
  • 8° grade: Administrator of the buildings
  • 9° degree: Elected Master of the Nine
  • 10° degree: Illustrious Elect of the Fifteen
  • 11° degree: Sublime Elect Knight
  • 12° degree: Grand Master Architect 
  • 12° degree: Grand Master Architect
  • 13° degree: Knight of the Royal Arch
  • 14° degree: Grand Elect of the Sacred Vault
  • 15° degree: Knight of the East and of the Sword
  • 16° degree: Prince of Jerusalem
  • 17° degree: Knight of the East and West
  • 18° degree: Knight of the Rose Croix
  • 19° degree: Scottish Sublime Grand Pontiff
  • 20° degree: Master ad vitam Venerable Grand Master of all regular lodges
  • 21° degree: Noachite or Prussian Knight
  • 22° Degree: Royal Axe Knight
  • 23° degree: Chief of the Tabernacle
  • 24° degree: Prince of the Tabernacle
  • 25° degree: Knight of the Bronze Serpent
  • 26° degree: Trinitarian Scotsman or Prince of Mercy
  • 27° degree: Grand Commander of the Temple
  • 28° degree: Knight of the Sun or Adept Prince
  • 29° degree: Grand Scotsman of St. Andrews
  • 30° degree: Grand Knight Elect Kadosh
  • 31° degree: Grand Inspector Commander Inquisitor
  • 32° degree: Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret
  • 33° degree: Sovereign Grand Inspector General
